It’s time to go #Full80!
Wednesday, July 8 will be an historic day in the life of our Club. For the very first time our Residency program will be hosting a Cup (aka Playoff) match at home. This is not a momentous occasion because it is the first time one of our youth sides has made it this far, quite the contrary. Both our U16s and U18s have been here before…and beyond. The historic element is that we will be able to actually play this match in BC.
We will be taking on Georgia United’s U16 in the quarterfinals of the United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) League at SFU Field #4. Some clubs in this League seem to have troubles getting their players into and/or out of Canada. Over the 5 years we have participated in this competition, we have had to play a number of League and Cup “home” matches in places like tropical Bellingham. However, earlier this season the USSDA made it known that should we progress, we would finally be able to play a Cup match our side of the border.
For those who claim to be supporters of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, this presents us with an incredible opportunity. We have the chance to help propel our players to victory. A victory would see our U16s into the semi-finals at the StubHub Centre in Carson, California.
We understand that some people don’t think supporting at our Residency matches is for them. Some seem to have deep convictions about this, which is fair enough. However, if you think about it from our U16 players perspective, what would they want? A quiet, tranquil evening up the mountain at SFU? Or would our players want as close to the full force of our Club’s supporters as possible? We’ll help remove this from the realm of the ambiguous - our players want as many flag-waving, chant-singing supporters behind them as can climb Mount Burnaby.
So do their coaches, their parents, and everyone entrusted to be a steward of our Club. We know this because some players have privately reached out to inquire if the supporters will in fact support.
Please do whatever you can to make the trek to SFU tomorrow night. The match kicks off at 6:00pm at Field #4. The halves are 40 minutes, so we’ll be giving our all for a full 80! Join us.
