MEZQUIDA!

We sing @nicolas_mezquida /@nico_mezquida's last name to the tune of The Champ's "Tequila". This is another chant born in the mind of ‪#‎VancouverSouthsider‬, Johnny Monster.

Nico did a good job in the limited time he was given in his first ‪#‎MLS‬ campaign. He added a creative spark to the matches he played in. He is one of our players that you feel would have benefited from a longer run in the side. Again, ‪#‎USLPRO‬ should help with this in 2015.

Nico's two goals both came on the road. In June he got our second goal in a 3-3 draw in Philly. In April he started our commendable comeback in Salt Lake. This photo is his celebration of that goal vs. RSL...the only way to celebrate when we are still down...run the ball back to the centre circle. @sebafernandez07 later smashed the equalizer from long range with nearly the final kick of the match.
Off the field, Nico added to the positive chemistry amongst our squad this season. We hope he'll do more of the same next year.

Nico, all the best to you and your family for the off season. We'll see you in January! ‪#‎Gracias‬ ‪#‎FuerteAbrazo‬

Also, we can arrange for these to be delivered to you by someone that is fat, jolly, and has a sizeable beard. Just let us know.

GER-SHON, GER-SHON, KOFFIE, KOFFIE

For @g.28.k / @Gersh28koffie we simply chant:

GER-SHON, GER-SHON,
KOFFIE, KOFFIE

to the tune of Queen's "We Will Rock You". It is a fitting tune for the tough tackling, strong-on-the-ball Ghanaian born midfielder.

The mutual ‪#‎Love‬ & ‪#‎Respect‬ between Gersh and ‪#‎VanCitySupporters‬ goes all the way back to his arrival in 2010. During our Cup run that Fall, Gersh endeared himself to all when he scored his first goal for us in the north end goal at Swangard vs. ‪#‎LowerCa5cadian‬ foes Portland. If you have never seen it before, it came in the opening minute of play and can be seen here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZB0_G4ZM-YE

It has been great to follow and encourage Gersh's growth as a player over these past 4.5 years. His time in ‪#‎MLS‬ has had it's ups and downs (a few untimely injuries). He loves to be the single holding midfielder, but was also great next to @matiaslaba this season. If we go to a 4-4-2 (Diamond) in 2015, he will also be able to contribute from either the left or right sides of the diamond. It will be interesting to see how that may develop.

Looking back on 2014 it is hard not to think of this as a stand out moment:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0-edckCmI0

It was a great contribution to another victory over ‪#‎Se4tt1e‬ that led to our completing our ‪#‎DriveForFive‬ and kept us as record holders in the ‪#‎Ca5cadiaCup‬.

Gersh, enjoy your time back in ‪#‎Ghana‬. Be safe. We can't wait to ‪#‎GiveOurAll‬ as you do the same for ‪#‎OurClub‬ in 2015.

P.S. We can't remember who took this photo, but it was during the second half of the ‪#‎ManCity‬ Friendly in 2011. Gersh, after helping our side to 1-0 in the first half, spent 30-40 minutes in the stands with ‪#‎LaDoceVancouver‬. Massimo Cusano (please bring back the trumpet!), @zacharyadammeisenheimer, and others that would become ‪#‎partners‬ in our movement, really appreciated Gersh's supporting with them. He joined us in 203/204 post match after he scored the winner in the 4-0 victory over ‪#‎TheGoats‬ in 2012 and again at ‪#‎FirstKick‬ 2013 when he got the only goal in a 1-0 win vs. TFC. We hope to have him back one day to lead ‪#‎TheHumba‬.

Ethen Sampson

After a year or so in our U23/PDL/Reserve side, Ethen Sampson earned an ‪#‎MLS‬ deal in March of 2014. His role in the team was to provide cover at rightback. He had to be patient, but all of his hard work paid off as Robbo trusted him with two starts in matches late in the season.

The Gaffer's confidence in Ethen's ability to play in the first team was based on the progression the player had made through his time in ‪#‎VanCity‬. The tough tackling ‪#‎BafanaBafana‬ Youth International really improved his positional play and decision making as he cemented his transition from being a centre back to playing on the right side of the back 4.

Ethen, we look forward to you pushing for more games in 2015. All the best as you spend the off-season with friends & family!

Fairwell Aminu Abdallah

This season another player we said goodbye to was @concious_man. Aminu Abdallah came to ‪#‎OurClub‬ from ‪#‎Ghana‬, following in the footsteps of @g.28.k. The towering, tough tackling, left-footed central midfielder was never able to break into the side. After a loan spell in Charleston he was waived.

Aminu, we wish things had gone better for you here in ‪#‎VanCity‬! We'll always remember your 360 roulette in ‪#‎PDX‬ during that Reserve match. All the best for the future!

Andre Lewis

@AndreLewis_LA came to ‪#‎VanCity‬ as a speedy, creative midfielder via the 7th overall selection in 2014's ‪#‎MLS‬'s Super Draft. Once things were sorted out with his initial deal with the New York Cosmos, Andre reported for our pre-season training.

Prior to the beginning of our campaign, @andre_la_lewis put in some memorable performances, including the way he celebrated his goals. Away to Victoria, things didn't go as planned, but in an intra squad match at UBC, he redeemed himself. Go to 1:59 for evidence of this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFUCCny_hjA

With the arrivals of Nico and Pedro, it was decided to loan out the Jamaican Youth International, so that he could get more quality time on the pitch. Andre played 14 games, scored once, and set up some of his teammates as a part of the Charleston Battery, ‪#‎OurClub‬'s ‪#‎USLPRO‬ affiliate side. However, in July, a torn ACL saw Andre's season come to and end. He retuned to ‪#‎UpperCa5cadia‬ for surgery, recovery, and rehab.

Andre, we hope you continue to heal well! We can't wait to see you 2015 pre-season training...backflips and all!

Thanks Carlyle

10 days ago it was announced that @deonmitchell19 would not be returning to ‪#‎VanCity‬. His contract was done and we failed to reach terms with him on a new deal. Carlyle Mitchell was joined by a handle of others as being the few players that have been a part of our ‪#‎MLS‬ journey for parts of all 4 years (Omar & Jay are also gone, which leaves us just Rusty, Gersh, and Jordan).

Mitch, we'll miss your aerial dominance, your threat from set pieces, and your long, fast stride that enabled you to recover quickly. We'll never forgot your nutmeg headed goal vs. The Goats! We also remember fondly that your 3 goals in the Reserves all came against ‪#‎Se4tt1e‬! Most importantly we'll always be thankful for the way you embraced the supporters in our city!

This photo was taken by Christopher Vose just before Mitch led us in ‪#‎TheLambada‬ after he set up one of the goals in ‪#‎OurClub‬'s 4-3 victory over New England in June of 2013. ‪#‎ManyThanks‬, ‪#‎Respect‬, & ‪#‎MuchLove‬ for what's up next in your career...we'll be following from afar.

Kekuta Manneh - Coming Into His Own

Looking back on @kekuta16's second season in ‪#‎VanCity‬, there were signs of his progress. He played, started, and was on the pitch for more minutes than in 2013. He scored a little less and set up the same number of goals. However, his role as the wide left of the "3" in our 4-2-3-1, continued to stretch defences and created space for fellow attackers.

One question that still remains is, what is ‪#‎Scooter‬'s best position. Although he can contribute from this wide attacking position, he has had his greatest success as and out-and-out striker. One only needs to fall into a daydream of last year's trip to ‪#‎Se4tt1e‬ to remember the possibilities of having him play up top. Not only did he bag 3 goals, but he changed the spelling of ‪#‎MiddleCa5cadia‬'s cultural centre...forever!

Kekuta seems to relish the big moments...especially playing away vs. the ‪#‎Flounders‬. In this year's ‪#‎Ca5cadiaCup‬ ‪#‎Finale‬ he scored the lone goal that maintained our status as ‪#‎RecordHolders‬ of ‪#‎OurCup‬. This is Christopher Vose's photo immediately after the goal. The celebration on the pitch was muted because of the knock Scooter had taken that meant he was replaced by @kianzfroese at the half, but in sections 300/301 all the ‪#‎CapsOnTour‬ were going crazy as we were on our way to continuing our reign as the ‪#‎KingsOfCa5cadia‬!!!

Kekuta, we hope you have a relaxing & refreshing off season. We look forward to ‪#‎GivingOurAll‬ in support of you again in 2015, as you do the same for ‪#‎OurClub‬!

Goodbye Bryce, and Good Luck

That time of the season has started...when we start to part ways w/players by not coming to terms w/them on a new deal, not taking up their option, waiving them, releasing them, leaving them exposed in the expansion draft, etc.

The 1st announcement has been made & today we'll focus on half of it. #OurClub has decided to not pick up the option on @brycealderson1's contract. It was the final option year on the deal. He can be claimed on waivers by another #MLS side in the Dec 10 Waiver Draft.

For many this is simply a player who was only played in 2 Voyageurs' Cup matches being let go. Bryce's story is so much deeper than that.

He came to #VanCity w/high hopes & supporters here had great expectations for him as they began to witness his skills & leadership abilities at Residency matches. 2010-12 saw Bryce help the U18s & PDL play some quality football & achieve many good results (including being U18 runners' up in 2012). Bryce's vision for the game, his quality passing range, & ability to play a key role in transition were all on display. He usually found himself as 1 of the "2" in a 4-2-3-1. From there he often conducted & controlled the offense.

Bryce's dominance @ the U18 & PDL levels got him an MLS GA/HG deal. There was great anticipation on how Bryce would continue to develop his game. This is where the frustration comes in.

Bryce was not able to crack the MLS side &, aside from a few Reserve matches & a loan spell @ Charleston, it appears to have inhibited his growth as a player.

Having a local USL Pro side is what might have been the missing link for such a talented player...we'll never know. However, we are excited that this is the direction our Club is going in. Sadly it is far too late for Bryce. He wanted to go somewhere he would play & ultimately we believe Robbo is the 1 that has done what is best for Bryce's future in allowing him to leave.

Bryce, you know we wish you well. We look forward to what is next. Those in our movement who are also a part of #TheVoyageurs can't wait to see what part you'll play for the #CMNT in the years ahead.

Much Love,
